Health & Safety Specialist

Our client is a well established company based in Dublin. We are actively seeking a Health & Safety Specialist to join their team on a full time permanent basis.

Permanent contract subject to successful completion of twelve months’ probation period


Reporting to the Risk Manager.

The candidate must have extensive knowledge and experience in managing the safety on large capital related projects with a full comprehensive understanding of Client roles and responsibilities.

Purpose of Role

The Health and Safety Officer will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the Health, Safety and Welfare at Work Act and ensuring the highest levels of safety performance and behavior on Dublin Port Company projects and Health & Safety generally within the Company.

The Health and Safety Officer will be required to evaluate current best practice and identify and recommend opportunities for improvement.


Effectively contribute to Dublin Port Company’s EHS Function.

Ensuring compliance with all relevant Health and Safety Legislation.

Assist with the implementation and maintenance of OHSAS 18001.

Comply, maintain and contribute to the improvements of Dublin Port Company Safety Management System.

On-site inspections, reporting and follow ups.

Reporting, Investigating and analysing accidents/ incidents and near misses.

Provide, organise and/or deliver health and safety training.

Development of weekly and monthly KPI presentations.

Willingness, flexibility and ability to adapt to diverse and fast-paced areas within Dublin Port Company.

Leadership, implementation and maintenance of Dublin Port project’s Health and Safety objectives and initiatives.

Contribute towards the development of action plans to ensure continuous improvement of Health and safety performance and management.

Liaising with various stakeholders of Dublin Port Company when required.

Responsible for the updating of the existing and development new contractor management strategies, policies and procedures and assessing compliance of same.

Provide technical expertise, strategic leadership and support for Dublin Port Projects Function (including acquisitions) on Health and Safety Legislation compliance and performance.

Administrative support and assistance within the EHS Function.

Qualifications, experience & required skills

Bachelor’s degree in Safety and Health (Level 8) or Bachelor’s degree in Safety and Health (Level 7) and a Bachelor’s degree in Construction or related field (Level 8).

Minimum 7 years’ experience in a leadership role within Health and Safety construction.

In-depth experience in Heavy Civil Engineering construction projects,

Proven site experience on major piling projects.

Proven track record within Industry on accident free sites.

Experience with certified safety management system implementation and maintenance over multiple sites a distinct advantage.

Qualified Internal Auditor for Safety Management Systems is desirable.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate an ability to lead and direct, plan work schedules, assign or delegate work, develop and mentor contractor performance and take corrective actions when necessary.

Team-player with a positive attitude and highly developed interpersonal communication skills and cultural sensitivity.

Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence personnel at all levels within an organisation.

Excellent organisational skills are essential.

Excellent demonstrated computer skills, including a proficiency in using common word processing software, spreadsheet software, database applications, project and presentation software, and email, contact management and scheduling software.

Barriers to success in role

Not being able to work and contribute within a team structure.

Not achieving set objectives and tasks on a consistent basis

Failure to build effective relationships with key stakeholders including management colleagues, other employees of Dublin Port, customers and key external stakeholders.

Lack of appreciation of commercial and financial realities, particularly in identifying project cost drivers and budgeting accordingly.

Failure to execute the above duties on a consistent basis

Inability to anticipate, articulate and cater for DPC requirements

Not being able to work on your own initiative and maintain confidentiality.
